December & January Themes

6th -8th Grades

In the months of December and January 6th - 8th  grades are working with the themes of Empathy, Anti-Bullying, Kindness, and Compassion.

Some of the lessons are:

Taking a Stand to Bullying- We learned that there is a difference between a  “normal conflict”  and” bullying.”

Bullying is...

  • Intentional, aggressive behavior that causes harm.

  • A pattern of behavior or repeated act that happens over time.

  • It involves an imbalance of power in a relationship.

We discussed three questions to ask yourself to identify if a situation is a normal conflict or bullying. The three questions are….

  1. Was it done on purpose?

  2. Did it happen more than once?

  3. Was there an imbalance of power?

The students have had a wonderful time acting out scenarios that demonstrate the difference between bullying and a normal life conflict.

Another lesson was Walking in someone else’s shoes-   This lesson was working on teaching Empathy to the students.  We watched a few videos and read some short stories titled “The Mothers of 911” & “A POW and his Torturer”.

The last lesson will be participating in “The Great Kindness Challenge” - This will allow the students practical applications of Kindness and Compassion.  They will be provided with a checklist of “50 Random Kind Acts”  It will be the goal of every student to see how many acts they can complete on this list!  Please feel free to participate in the challenge at home with your family.  See the attached link to help spread the kindness!   https://thegreatkindnesschallenge.com/
